Why does my old Chromebook charge and power on only intermittently?

I've had this Google Chromebook for about eight years. A few days ago, it stopped charging and wouldn't turn on. It briefly started working again yesterday, but now it's unresponsive once more. I left it charging overnight and it showed 100%, yet it still won't power on or appear to be charging. What could be causing this, and is there anything I can try before replacing it?

After eight years, the battery may have reached the end of its useful life. A battery can sometimes report 100% while still being unable to provide enough power to start the Chromebook. Check the exact model and see whether a replacement battery is available and reasonably priced. If it still wonโ€™t work with a known-good charger or replacement battery, the charging circuit or another internal component may be failing.

MellowPine47: Thanks, Iโ€™ll look up the model and see whether replacing the battery is practical.

Given its age and the intermittent charging and startup behavior, a hardware failure is fairly likely. It may be worth keeping as a temporary device while saving for a replacement, but avoid spending much on repairs unless the battery is inexpensive and easy to install.

MellowPine47: Iโ€™m saving for a new one, so Iโ€™m hoping this can keep working a little longer in the meantime.
