I recently bought a second-hand Panasonic RX-D29. Whenever I insert a music CD, the player tries to read it for a few seconds and then reports that there is no disc. It also makes a rattling sound while attempting to read the CD. What could be causing this, and is there anything I can safely try to fix it?

Listen for whether the disc spins up normally. A rattling sound could point to the disc, spindle, or loading mechanism not turning smoothly, rather than just a dirty lens. Try a known-good CD and check that the disc is seated properly. If several discs produce the same rattling and “no disc” message, the mechanism or laser assembly may need repair.
Cleaning and lightly lubricating the moving parts may help if the mechanism is sticking, but avoid getting lubricant on the lens, disc, or motor. Since this is an older second-hand unit, a worn laser or mechanical failure is also quite possible, so replacement may be more practical unless you particularly want to restore this model.
The most likely causes are a dirty optical lens, a worn-out laser pickup, or a problem with the disc-spinning mechanism. You can try gently cleaning the lens with a cotton swab and a very small amount of isopropyl alcohol, then let it dry completely. If it still cannot detect discs, the laser may be failing and the repair might cost more than the player is worth.
That makes sense. I wasn’t sure whether the problem was the lens or another part, but I’ll try cleaning it carefully first.
