Why does my PC get loud and lose FPS when the side glass is installed?

My computer suddenly becomes extremely loud, almost like a distant airplane, and my FPS drops whenever the sliding tempered-glass side panel is screwed into place. With the glass removed, the system is quieter and performance returns to normal. Could the panel be restricting airflow and causing overheating, or does this sound like a failing fan?

Since removing the side panel fixes both symptoms, airflow or heat is the most likely explanation. Run a temperature monitor with the case closed and compare it with the panel removed. Clean the filters and fans, confirm the front or bottom fans are intakes and the rear or top fans exhaust air, and avoid using the PC long-term with the glass off because it can collect more dust and disrupt the intended airflow.

A failing or obstructed fan is possible, especially if the sound is grinding, rattling, or uneven. Stop the PC and check that every fan spins freely and that no cable is touching a blade. Also make sure the glass is seated correctly and isnโ€™t pressing against anything. If the temperatures are normal but one fan still makes that airplane-like noise, replacing that fan may be necessary.

The fan may be ramping up to maximum speed because the system is getting too hot with the panel installed. That doesnโ€™t automatically mean the fan is failing. Check your CPU and GPU temperatures while gaming, then inspect the dust filters, fan direction, cable placement, and whether the glass panel is blocking an intake or exhaust. If temperatures rise high enough, the hardware can throttle and cause the FPS drops.

MellowCedar42: The panel is the sliding glass window that lets me see inside the case. With it removed, the FPS and noise issue disappear.
