Why Does My PC Shut Off During Demanding Games?

I recently built a PC from parts purchased online. Most components have been used for less than a year, although the CPU and GPU are older. The system runs normally during lighter use, but after playing demanding games such as Ready or Not and 007 First Light for a while, it suddenly powers off with no error message or blue screen. The graphics card is an AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, which barely fits inside the compact case, and the motherboard is an MSI B550M PRO-VDH. I'm wondering whether the motherboard, graphics card, or cooling is responsible. I've already tried fixes suggested for possible motherboard issues, but nothing has helped. The GPU temperature approaches 100°C during intensive gameplay, while the system's reported power draw remains well below the 750W power supply's rating. What should I check first?

The 750W rating alone doesn’t rule out a power issue, since the PSU’s age, quality, cables, and transient handling also matter. Make sure the graphics card uses the recommended separate PCIe power cables rather than a single daisy-chained cable. However, given the nearly 100°C GPU temperature and compact case, overheating is the first thing I’d investigate before replacing the motherboard.

A sudden shutdown with no crash message usually points to a protection cutoff rather than a normal software problem. The GPU reaching around 100°C is a major warning sign, especially in a small case. Check the GPU hotspot temperature, CPU temperature, fan speeds, and whether the case has enough intake and exhaust airflow. Cleaning dust, improving cable placement, and testing with the side panel removed can help confirm whether heat is the trigger.
