Why does my Philips TV slow down when an 8TB USB drive is connected?

I have a Philips 65OLED810 connected to a WD My Book 8TB external hard drive formatted as NTFS, with movies stored on it. Whenever I plug the drive into the TV, the entire system becomes extremely sluggish and some apps close immediately. As soon as I safely eject or unplug the drive, the TV returns to normal speed. Has anyone experienced this and found a reliable fix?

An 8TB drive can take the TV quite a while to scan and build its media library, especially if it contains a large number of files. During that process, the TV's limited processor and storage indexing can make the interface and apps feel unusably slow. Give it time to finish scanning, or reduce the number of folders and files the TV has to index.

Try the other USB ports, since one may provide better power or behave more reliably with the drive. Also make sure the drive has its own power adapter, which the WD My Book normally does. If the problem continues, test another smaller drive to determine whether the issue is the TV's handling of this particular disk rather than USB storage in general.

This setup worked normally before, so it could also be a change in the TV's software or a newer, slower media scan rather than the drive itself.

If the drive used to work properly when connected directly to the TV, check what changed: a recent TV firmware update, a growing movie library, or file-system errors on the disk. Safely eject the drive, connect it to a computer, and check its health and NTFS file system. A firmware update or factory reset may help if the TV's media database has become corrupted.
