Why Does My Phone Charge Slower with a Surge Protector?

I own a Samsung S24 Ultra and usually plug it into a surge protector with a 45W charger because it's convenient. Recently, I noticed that when I plugged it directly into the wall, the charging speed reported by the AccuBattery app was significantly higher. I've also observed that the battery passthrough feature while gaming finally worked when connected to the wall, which it didn't do before. Is this behavior typical for surge protectors? Should I consider upgrading to a better one or is my current one possibly faulty?

Samsung’s smart charging system can affect the charging speed readings. It might throttle the speed while showing fast charging if it thinks you're leaving it plugged in for a long time. You can reset the smart charging by switching fast charging off and on in the settings and then doing a hard reset by holding the power and volume down buttons.

It sounds like your surge protector might be malfunctioning. If it's damaged, that could definitely affect the charging speed. Have you tried using a different one?

So it's really about being damaged, not that it's just cheap? I also have my PC and other devices connected to it, but everything else seems fine.

Yeah, testing with a new or known good surge protector would be a smart move. If your phone charges normally with that, then it’s likely the current one is faulty.

Make sure the battery is at the same charge level when comparing. Sometimes, variations can occur depending on the starting charge percentage.

I believe I was consistent with the battery levels, but the fast charging message kept coming up regardless.
