Why does my SSD hit 100% usage and freeze Windows 11?

My 1 TB SSD has been installed for about a year, but recently its active time spikes to 100% when I boot the computer, download games, or record clips. Sometimes the entire system freezes while I'm gaming or watching videos. The drive's health check reports that it is healthy, but I'm still worried about a failing SSD, malware, or another software problem. I'm running Windows 11 with 32 GB of RAM and can't currently afford to replace the drive. What should I check first?

A basic health result is reassuring, but it doesn’t rule out every drive, cable, firmware, or controller problem. Run CrystalDiskInfo and check the detailed SMART values, temperature, firmware, and connection status. Also make sure important files are backed up before doing more testing.

Open Windows Resource Monitor and check the Disk section to see which process is causing the heavy reads or writes. That can reveal whether a game launcher, antivirus scan, Windows service, recording software, or another program is responsible. Once you identify it, try updating, reinstalling, or disabling that program temporarily.

Since the problem happens during downloads and clipping, watch both disk active time and transfer speed. A drive can show 100% active time even when it’s moving relatively little data if it is struggling with lots of small operations. Check for pending Windows updates, SSD firmware updates, chipset/storage-driver updates, and run a full malware scan as well.

If Resource Monitor doesn’t identify a clear culprit, try a clean boot to determine whether a startup utility or background service is causing the spikes. Reinstalling Windows would be a last resort, not the first step, and you should back up your data before considering it.
