I've been using a wired headset with my Lenovo IdeaPad 1i running Linux, but for the past couple of days its microphone has been unreliable. Sometimes it detects nothing, sometimes only background noise or static, and occasionally it seems to pick up headphone audio and produces extremely loud distorted sounds. A microphone testing app also records only static. The microphone briefly worked again on its own yesterday, then failed the next day. The headset uses a 3-contact plug, while the laptop has a combined headset jack. Is this likely a headset or compatibility problem, and how can I troubleshoot it before replacing anything?

The simplest way to separate a headset problem from a laptop problem is to test another microphone or headset. Since the mic is built into this headset and can't be replaced separately, try a known-working four-contact headset or a USB microphone. If the replacement works consistently, the current headset or its three-contact plug is the likely cause. If every microphone has static, then the laptop jack, audio configuration, or hardware may be at fault.
First check what kind of plug the headset uses. A combined laptop headset jack normally expects a four-contact TRRS plug so it can carry left audio, right audio, ground, and microphone. A three-contact plug is usually meant for stereo headphones only, so the microphone may not be connected correctly or could produce noise. Also inspect the jack for dust or damage. In the audio settings, install and open pavucontrol, then check the Input Devices tab to make sure the correct microphone is selected, unmuted, and receiving a sensible input level. The audio hardware appears to be Intel High Definition Audio, so the basic device should be supported.

There hasn't been any liquid in the jack. The headset is connected through the laptop's headphone jack, and the plug has three contacts. The laptop reports an Intel Celeron/Pentium Silver High Definition Audio device.
