Why does the Ryzen 7 7700 cost more than the faster 7700X?

I'm comparing the AMD Ryzen 7 7700 and Ryzen 7 7700X. The Ryzen 7 7700 has a 65W TDP, while the 7700X is rated at 105W, and the 7700X also has a higher base clock. Despite that, the 7700 is currently more expensive in the listing I found. Is there a technical reason for this, or is it simply a pricing and availability issue? I'm new to CPU shopping and want to avoid paying extra for performance or features I won't actually use.

The 7700 and 7700X are essentially the same CPU design, but they use different power limits and clock settings. The 7700X runs faster and consumes more power, while the 7700 is more efficient and commonly includes a basic cooler. The 7700X is not automatically the better value, though—buy whichever is cheaper after considering whether you need a cooler.

That helps. I was mainly worried that choosing the non-X model would somehow be the wrong decision because I probably won’t use the extra performance or higher power limit.

The listing appears to be for an OEM product from a third-party seller, which makes the price even less meaningful. Check several retailers and compare the total package, including the cooler and warranty. In many markets, the 7700X can be cheaper simply because it is more widely stocked or currently on sale.

This is almost certainly a retailer and inventory issue rather than a reflection of performance. Prices can vary based on supply, demand, promotions, and when a store last restocked. Sometimes a less popular model has limited inventory and ends up costing more than a faster model that is being discounted.

The X suffix usually indicates higher out-of-the-box clocks and power limits, not a completely different chip. Retail pricing does not always follow the product hierarchy: older models, graphics cards, and CPUs can all become strangely priced when stock levels change. If the 7700X is cheaper where you are, it is generally the more attractive purchase, assuming the cooler and warranty costs do not erase the difference.
