Why does Windows report more storage used by installed apps than I can find?

Windows says my installed apps are using about 114 GB, but when I add up the sizes shown for the individual apps, I only get roughly 65โ€“75 GB. Could Windows be including apps or files that aren't shown in the installed-apps list? I also keep many app shortcuts on my desktopโ€”could those be counted twice, or is the missing space likely stored elsewhere?

Desktop shortcuts donโ€™t cause an app to be counted twice. A shortcut is only a tiny link to the actual program. The difference is more likely caused by related files being spread across several folders, along with Windowsโ€™ inaccurate size reporting.

The total can include more than the main program folders. Apps may store data, caches, downloads, updates, DLC, and dependencies in locations such as ProgramData and the user AppData folders. Launchers and Microsoft Store or Xbox apps can make the reported numbers even less consistent.

Windowsโ€™ installed-app storage figure is often unreliable because it depends partly on applications reporting their own sizes, and many programs donโ€™t report accurately. To find the real usage, scan the drive with a tool such as WizTree or TreeSize, which shows storage by folder and file.
