Why does Windows show 80% memory usage when Task Manager apps only use 35–50%?

I use my computer for Adobe editing and other demanding tasks, and it has 16 GB of RAM. Recently, Windows has been reporting around 80% memory usage, even though the applications listed in Task Manager appear to account for only about 35–50%. Is this expected behavior, such as cached memory or memory reserved for graphics, or is there something I should troubleshoot?

If the computer uses integrated graphics, part of the system RAM may be reserved as video memory. A dedicated graphics card avoids using as much shared system memory, although the exact amount depends on the hardware and settings.

The percentage may be coming from total system memory rather than just the apps shown in the main Task Manager list. Windows itself, background services, cached data, hardware reservations, and possibly shared graphics memory all contribute. Open the Memory section in Task Manager or Resource Monitor to see the breakdown.

Sixteen gigabytes can be tight for serious photo or video editing, especially with large projects, multiple Adobe applications, or a browser open at the same time. If the system is actually slowing down or using the page file heavily, adding more RAM would help. If performance is normal, 80% usage isn't automatically a problem.

This is usually normal. Windows uses otherwise-available RAM for file and application caching to make things load faster. That cached memory can be released automatically when an application needs it, so a high percentage by itself doesn't mean anything is wrong. Check whether you're actually getting low-memory warnings, heavy paging, or slowdowns.
