Why doesn’t my new computer recognize my external hard drive for game downloads?

I just got a new PC after my laptop died, and I tried connecting my 4TB Seagate external hard drive. I can see it listed in my files, but when I go to download a game on Steam, it's not showing up as an option. I'm not very tech-savvy, so I could really use some help figuring this out!

Check your Steam settings and make sure to add the external drive under the storage settings. That usually does the trick!

I did what you said, but now all my games on the external drive are gone? They say I need to reinstall them, but the drive is still showing up for downloads. I did plug in a new mouse pad and ran a Windows update today. Any ideas on why this happened?

If that doesn't work, try going to 'Computer Management' from the search bar. Select 'Storage' and see if your drive is there without a letter assigned. If so, right-click it to assign a letter; this usually helps the PC recognize it properly for downloads.

I tried that and everything Google suggested, but it didn't help. Good thing I followed the other guy’s advice about Steam; I feel kind of silly now for not checking there first!
