For gaming hardware, there seems to be a huge price range for graphics cards, memory, and storage. A GPU can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, and large amounts of fast RAM or SSD storage can also become extremely expensive. CPUs, however, seem to top out around the $400–$500 range for the best gaming-focused models, such as the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. There are much more expensive processors designed for servers, rendering, and other professional workloads, but why aren't there $1,000–$2,000 CPUs aimed specifically at gaming? Is there simply not enough demand, or would a more expensive gaming CPU provide little real-world benefit? I mostly play esports games, which are often CPU-limited, so I'm wondering why I can't spend as much on the CPU as on the GPU.

The main factors are production cost, supply, and demand. A gaming CPU usually doesn’t need a huge number of cores, and once it has strong single-threaded performance, low latency, and enough cache, adding more hardware gives increasingly small gains in games. Expensive CPUs are generally justified by workloads that can use many cores continuously, such as rendering, simulation, or server tasks. Also, memory prices can fluctuate dramatically, so today’s expensive RAM kits aren’t necessarily representative of their normal cost.
The price comparison is also a little misleading. GPUs are specialized processors with enormous dies, lots of high-speed memory, and very expensive development and manufacturing costs. Their top models can be sold to professionals and businesses as well as gamers, which supports much higher prices. Storage and RAM prices mainly scale with capacity, while a CPU’s usefulness for games does not scale the same way. Once a CPU is fast enough, paying several times more usually buys only a modest improvement, if any.
Gaming CPUs have reached the point where even high refresh-rate gaming can be handled without an enormous processor. In esports titles, the CPU can be the limiting component, but that doesn’t mean an extremely expensive CPU would automatically produce proportionally higher frame rates. The game engine, software optimization, latency, and the limits of the rest of the system often matter more. A manufacturer could make a much larger gaming CPU, but there probably wouldn’t be enough buyers to make it worthwhile.
