One thing I like about some AMD stock coolers is how simple they are to install: keep the motherboard's retention brackets in place, hook the cooler's clips onto them, and secure the lever. Why do so many aftermarket air coolers instead require removing the brackets and installing their own screws, standoffs, or backplates? Not every AMD stock cooler uses those clips anyway. Several Wraith models use the motherboard backplate with four spring-loaded screws, which is closer to the mounting approach used by many aftermarket coolers. The clip system is mostly practical for smaller, lighter coolers where convenience matters more than maximum mounting pressure.
Size and shape are major factors. A tower cooler may not have enough clearance for the long spring clip, and there may not be room to reach the lever once the heatsink and fan are installed. The clip mechanism can also interfere with heatpipes or force the cooler into an inconvenient orientation.
The stock clips aren’t necessarily easier or stronger. They can require a surprising amount of force, be awkward to remove, and put less-even pressure across the CPU. Larger aftermarket heatsinks generally benefit from a more controlled, spring-loaded screw mount that distributes the load better.
