Why is Discord picking up my desktop audio through my microphone?

Since yesterday, Discord has started transmitting my desktop audio through my microphone. It still happens when the microphone is muted in software, but stops when the microphone itself is unplugged. I use Voicemod, although disabling it does not fix the problem. Discord's bypass system audio input processing and automatic gain control options are off, and changing noise suppression has no effect. Stereo Mix is disabled, and I've also disabled unused microphones and speakers. The problem only happens in Discord—NVIDIA ShadowPlay recordings have no desktop-audio bleed—so the hardware seems to work normally elsewhere. Lowering Discord's input sensitivity prevents the echo, but it also cuts off a lot of my voice. My headset is connected through a USB audio adapter because my computer's front audio jacks are faulty. What could be causing this, and how can I stop Discord from capturing desktop audio without making my mic unusable?

A faulty or poorly isolated USB sound adapter can sometimes feed playback into the microphone channel, especially with a headset using a combined 3.5 mm plug. Try the headset directly on another known-good audio interface or USB adapter. If the problem disappears, replacing the adapter is probably the practical fix.

The fact that ShadowPlay doesn’t record the bleed makes this more likely to be specific to Discord’s selected input or processing path rather than a general Windows recording problem. Temporarily disable Voicemod’s virtual devices, restart Discord completely, and make sure Discord isn’t using a virtual cable, monitor output, or another loopback device as its input.

Since the issue stops when the mic is physically unplugged and you’re using a USB audio adapter, the adapter, headset connection, or its driver is a strong suspect. Discord may be receiving a mixed input signal even though Stereo Mix is disabled. Check Discord’s Voice & Video settings and explicitly select the actual microphone instead of leaving the input device on Default. Then test with another USB port or a different adapter/headset if possible.
