Why is it so hard to delete an Azure account?

I created an Azure account to host a VM while temporarily moving some on-prem servers, but it turned out to be ridiculously expensive. After canceling my subscription, I'm now trying to delete my account, and it's taking forever! I'm curious why Azure is so costly and why the account deletion process seems so complicated. Anyone else faced this issue?
