Why Is My CPU Reaching 99°C and Causing Severe Game Lag?

My CPU temperature keeps climbing to around 99°C, and games become extremely laggy. Could the problem be old or dried-out thermal paste, a failing fan, dust buildup, poor cooler contact, or simply an older processor? I think the system has an older Intel Core i3 or i5, but I'm not sure. What information should I check, and what troubleshooting steps should I try first?

Start with the basics: shut the computer down, inspect the fans, clean out dust, and make sure the CPU cooler is firmly attached. If it’s an air cooler, confirm the fan spins normally. If it’s a liquid cooler, the pump may have failed or the radiator could be blocked. Don’t keep gaming at 99°C until you identify the cause.

Replacing the thermal paste may help if the cooler is old or was installed incorrectly, but CPU age by itself usually isn’t the reason for overheating.
