I have an HP 245 G8 with 8GB of memory installed as two 4GB modules. Only about 3.4GB is available, and the same limitation appears in both Windows and Ubuntu, so it does not seem to be an operating system setting. The integrated graphics is reportedly configured to use only around 256MB. The laptop previously had a hard-drive problem, and after resetting it, the reduced memory became noticeable. It also sometimes fails to start normally and will boot only after I enter and exit the BIOS. What could be causing this, and what should I check to fix it?

Some RAM is normally reserved for integrated graphics and other hardware, but only a few hundred megabytes would be expected—not nearly half of the installed memory. If the BIOS recognizes all 8GB but the operating system does not, check for a memory limit setting in the boot configuration and reset the BIOS to its defaults. If the BIOS itself sees only about 4GB, the issue needs to be resolved at the hardware or motherboard level.
If the limit appears in both operating systems, this is probably a hardware or firmware issue rather than Windows or Ubuntu. Check how much memory the BIOS detects first. If the BIOS also shows roughly 4GB, one memory module may be loose, faulty, or not being detected, or the slot could be damaged. Power the laptop off, reseat both modules, and clean the contacts carefully if needed.
Test the modules one at a time. Remove one 4GB stick, boot the laptop, and check the detected memory; then repeat with the other stick in the same slot. If both work individually, test the known-good stick in the other slot. This will help identify a bad module or a damaged memory slot. Also confirm that both operating systems are 64-bit, since a 32-bit system usually tops out around 3–4GB usable.

I’ll check the BIOS reading and reseat the memory. The startup problem makes a connection or hardware issue seem possible.
