Why Is My i9-14900K Running Extremely Hot Even Under Light Loads?

My previous i9-13900K failed a couple of months ago, and I replaced it with an i9-14900K because it was the fastest CPU I could find locally. Ever since, the temperatures have been unusually high: around 50ยฐC at idle, 70โ€“80ยฐC while watching videos, and 90โ€“100ยฐC while gaming, even with only about 30% CPU usage. The motherboard's CPU warning light also comes on intermittently. I applied a -0.065 V core-voltage offset, but it hasn't made much difference. The system uses an ASUS ROG Strix Z790-E motherboard and a Corsair iCUE H150i Elite LCD XT 360 mm AIO. The processor was sold as new but arrived without its usual retail packaging, so it may have been refurbished. What should I check or change?

Because the CPU did not arrive in its normal retail packaging, Iโ€™d also consider the possibility that it was refurbished or previously stressed. Before buying another processor, verify the cooler mounting, apply fresh thermal paste, install the latest BIOS, and configure Intel-recommended power limits. If it still reaches 90โ€“100ยฐC under light workloads, the CPU or cooler may be defective.

Make sure the BIOS is fully updated, including the Intel microcode update intended to address the instability issues with these processors. BIOS settings should also use sensible Intel power limits rather than letting the board run unlimited power. An undervolt alone may not be enough.

MellowCedar47: I updated the BIOS as soon as I installed the processor, but the temperatures are still just as high.

That AIO could be part of the problem, especially if it has performed poorly since you first installed it. Check that the pump is running, the radiator fans are responding, and the cold plate is firmly mounted. If contact and pump operation look fine, replacing the cooler may be necessary.

MellowCedar47: The cooler has seemed underwhelming since I bought it, although Iโ€™m not looking forward to rewiring and replacing the entire AIO.

The cooler may not be making proper contact with the CPU. When switching processors, repaste it and check that the mounting pressure is even. LGA1700 sockets can also flex the CPU slightly, so an LGA1700 contact frame may improve contact and temperatures.
