Why is My Laptop Using So Much Data on Hotspot?

I'm using my laptop connected to my smartphone's hotspot for internet, but my 1 GB data plan runs out super fast, even though I barely do any browsing. I'm curious about what might be gobbling up all my data. Also, is there a way to intentionally slow down my connection to stretch the data a bit? I've found myself needing to do two or three top-ups each day because of this issue.

You should definitely set your laptop's hotspot connection as metered. Windows can automatically use up your data with updates and background processes. With just 1 GB, you’re going to run out quickly—consider that one HD YouTube video can consume that entire plan! You might need to think about getting more data.

I've even turned off auto-play on Reddit, but it still disappears way too fast.
