Why Is My Legion Laptop CPU Reaching 104°C and Consuming So Much Power While Gaming?

I have a Legion laptop with a 10th-generation Intel i7, an RTX 5070, 32 GB of RAM, and a 240 Hz OLED display. I recently removed the manufacturer control software and started using Legion Toolkit instead. Since then, the laptop feels better overall, but games such as Minecraft and Apex Legends are not delivering the performance I expected.

While playing, the CPU reaches around 104°C and sometimes uses 60–125 watts, while the GPU usually uses only about 60–70 watts. HWiNFO also reports that the CPU package is thermal throttling, and I noticed a package power spike as high as roughly 168 watts. Is this normal for this processor, or is something configured incorrectly? I would appreciate advice on safe power limits, fan settings, FPS caps, cooling, and whether the thermal paste or heatsink contact could be a problem.

A few other things may help: raise the rear of the laptop with a stand so the intake vents can breathe, keep the vents and fans clean, and use the dedicated GPU mode if your toolkit provides it. If you do not need maximum CPU performance, disable aggressive boost or set the maximum processor state to 99% in Windows power settings. That prevents boost clocks and can substantially reduce heat, though it may lower CPU performance in some workloads.

The newer RTX 5070 and high-end Ultra-series processor can draw considerably more power and produce more heat than an older laptop with an RTX 4060 and Ryzen processor. A brief power spike is not automatically dangerous, but sustained temperatures around 104°C combined with thermal-throttling flags mean the current settings are too aggressive for continuous gaming. Lowering CPU power and capping FPS is usually a better first step than trying to force the maximum boost clock.

The HWiNFO reading indicates genuine CPU thermal throttling. The processor is boosting aggressively and reaching power levels that the laptop cooling system cannot sustain during gaming. In Legion Toolkit, try Balanced mode instead of Performance and set a manual CPU limit, such as a 45–55 watt sustained limit with a short-term limit around 60 watts. You can also use a more aggressive fan curve. If the laptop is older or still reaches 100°C at moderate power, inspect the fans and consider having the heatsink contact and thermal paste checked.
