Why is my otherwise powerful PC so slow to boot and load programs?

My computer takes several minutes to start and remains nearly unusable for about five minutes after reaching the desktop. Programs and games also open very slowly and feel laggy. I realize an SSD would probably help, but I have used older computers with hard drives that did not feel this sluggish, so I am unsure whether something else is bottlenecking the system. The PC has an Intel Core i7-9700 processor, 32 GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060, and a 1 TB hard drive with about 682 GB occupied. It is running a 64-bit operating system.

Install an SSD as soon as you can and put the operating system and applications on it. A 250 GB or 500 GB SSD would be enough to make a dramatic difference, while you can keep the existing hard drive for larger files and games that do not need fast loading. SATA SSDs are already a huge upgrade; an NVMe drive is also an option if your motherboard supports one.

Defragmenting the hard drive may provide a small temporary improvement, but it will not solve the underlying problem. Before replacing anything, you could also check Task Manager during the slow period to see whether disk usage is pinned at 100 percent, and review startup programs. Still, the long boot time and sluggish application launches strongly point to the HDD.

The hard drive is almost certainly the main bottleneck. Modern operating systems constantly read and write many small files, and mechanical drives are extremely slow at that compared with even a basic SATA SSD. Your CPU, RAM, and graphics card are more than adequate for normal use, but they cannot make a slow boot drive feel responsive.
