Why Is My Ryzen 5 3600 Idling at 90–95°C Despite Trying Two Coolers?

My Ryzen 5 3600 is idling around 90–95°C. I replaced the thermal paste, checked that it spread evenly, and tried both an iBuyPower 120 mm single-fan cooler and a Corsair 240 mm dual-fan cooler, but the temperature stayed extremely high with both. The cooler fans spin, there is no protective film left on the heatsinks, and the mounts seem secure without being over-tightened. The temperature appears that high in both the NVIDIA app and the BIOS. I bought the system secondhand and am trying to figure out whether this is a mounting problem, an incorrect BIOS voltage setting, a sensor-reading issue, or defective hardware.

Before assuming the CPU is damaged, verify the actual reading with another monitoring program such as HWiNFO or Ryzen Master. BIOS temperatures are useful, but software can sometimes report the wrong sensor or unit. Since the BIOS also shows 90–95°C, though, check the CPU voltage and clock speed there. A manual voltage setting or an unusual overclock could make the processor run hot; loading optimized defaults or clearing CMOS is a reasonable next step.

I’m seeing the same high temperature in the BIOS and in the NVIDIA app, so I’ll reset the CMOS and check whether the voltage settings are abnormal.

The temperature is so high that something is probably wrong beyond ordinary thermal paste. With the PC powered off, inspect the CPU socket and the underside of the processor for bent contacts, contamination, or damage. Then test with the simplest setup possible and watch the temperature immediately after powering on. If the reading still reaches 90°C in the BIOS with a correctly mounted cooler, the motherboard, CPU, or temperature sensor may be defective.

The original Ryzen 5 3600 normally runs acceptably even with its basic stock cooler, so replacing paste alone would not explain this behavior. Make sure the cooler is using the correct AM4 mounting hardware and that the backplate has not shifted or fallen behind the motherboard. If the mount pattern looks good, the pump or cooler power connection is correct, and a CMOS reset changes nothing, the secondhand motherboard or CPU may need to be replaced.

A Ryzen 5 3600 should not idle anywhere near 95°C, especially with a 240 mm cooler. Since you already tried two coolers, carefully remount one again and check that the cooler is making full, even contact with the CPU. Also confirm that the pump is running if the Corsair cooler is an AIO, and make sure its pump or fan header is configured correctly in the BIOS. A cooler can feel secure while still failing to transfer heat properly.
