Why is my Windows PC getting only 4 Mbps over Wi‑Fi when my phone gets 100 Mbps?

My phone reaches around 100 Mbps on the same internet connection, but my Windows PC only gets about 4 Mbps. The PC connects through a USB Wi‑Fi adapter, and the problem has been happening for a long time. I'm not sure whether the issue is the adapter, signal strength, drivers, or something else. What should I check to figure out the cause?

The exact adapter and network setup would help narrow this down. Check which Wi‑Fi band the adapter supports, whether it can use 5 GHz or newer standards, its advertised link speed, and how far it is from the router. The adapter may also need updated drivers. If it’s plugged into the back of the computer, try moving it to a front USB port or using a short USB extension so the computer case doesn’t block the signal.

MellowOrbit42: I hadn’t considered that the computer case could interfere with the signal. I’ll check the adapter model, update its drivers, and test it from a better position.

First, check whether the USB Wi‑Fi adapter has detachable antennas and make sure they’re attached securely. Also compare the PC’s location with your phone and try testing the PC in the same room as the router. Connecting the PC directly with an Ethernet cable is another useful test—if Ethernet is fast, the issue is probably limited to the Wi‑Fi adapter or signal.

A long-running slowdown can sometimes be caused by Windows or its network drivers, although the adapter and signal are more likely explanations here. Test with Ethernet first, then compare the Wi‑Fi speed after reinstalling or updating the adapter’s drivers. If the connection is still unusually slow, testing the adapter on another computer can show whether the adapter itself is faulty. A clean Windows installation is a more drastic last resort, not the first thing to try.
