I just bought a Lenovo laptop and noticed that around 70 GB of storage is already occupied in Windows Settings. So far, I've only installed Firefox and Discord. I expected Windows 11 itself to use roughly 20–30 GB, so I'm trying to understand what else is taking up the remaining space. Could this be caused by system files, recovery data, updates, drivers, or preinstalled Lenovo software, and what's the safest way to identify and remove anything unnecessary?

A new Windows installation can include more than just the core operating system. Restore points, update files kept for rollback, recovery images, driver packages, temporary files, logs, and the manufacturer’s bundled software can add up. Some laptops also include a previous Windows installation or a recovery partition. It’s best to find out exactly what’s using the space before deleting anything.
There may also be manufacturer bloatware and bundled tools taking up space. Once you identify them, uninstall programs you don’t need through Windows’ Apps settings. Be cautious with cleanup utilities, since aggressive options can remove restore points, driver backups, browser data, or files needed to undo an update.
Check the drive with TreeSize Free or a similar disk-usage tool. It will show which folders and files are taking up the space, so you can tell whether the cause is Windows updates, recovery files, Lenovo utilities, or something else. Avoid deleting folders manually until you know what they are.
Seventy gigabytes is a little high for a mostly untouched installation, but it isn’t automatically a problem. If the laptop has a 1 TB drive, that amount is relatively small. If it has only a 128 GB or 256 GB drive, then it’s worth investigating more closely. Windows Settings also counts reserved storage and system data that may not be obvious.
