Why is Windows 11 using almost twice as much RAM after I upgraded?

I added another 16GB of RAM to my Windows 11 PC, bringing the total to around 32GB. With the same programs and workload, Task Manager now shows nearly twice as much memory in use as before. Is something wrong, and is there a way to make Windows use less RAM?

Check the details in Task Manager instead of focusing only on the overall number. Cached or standby memory may be counted as used, but it is readily available when needed. Unless the computer is slowing down, applications are failing, or the committed memory is close to its limit, there is usually nothing you need to change.

Modern operating systems try to use available RAM rather than leaving it empty. Windows and some applications may adjust their caching or preloading based on the amount of installed memory, so usage can increase after an upgrade without indicating a problem.

This is probably normal caching. Since more RAM is available, Windows keeps more recently used files and data in memory to make programs and files open faster. That cached memory is released automatically whenever an application needs it.
