Why is Windows using most of my RAM when no apps are open?

My PC recently installed some Windows updates, but the high memory usage started a few days earlier. Even with no applications open, RAM usage is usually above 65โ70%. Task Manager shows processes such as Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, Search, and sometimes Widgets using memory. I do not have much RAM installed, but this was never a problem during the past five years. The computer is not obviously malfunctioning, so I'm trying to understand whether this usage is normal or if something needs fixing.

Search, Widgets, and Windows security components can normally run in the background. The Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool may use extra memory temporarily after an update or during a scan. If the system feels normal, this may not require any action. You can disable Widgets or unnecessary startup programs if you want to reduce background usage.

If the computer is slow or the memory usage keeps increasing over time, run a full scan with Windows Security and check the Startup Apps section in Task Manager. Also compare the amount of installed RAM with the workloadโsystems with 4 GB or 8 GB can appear nearly full even when Windows is functioning normally. Persistent problems may indicate a leaking application, failing software update, or simply that more RAM would help.

High RAM usage by itself is not necessarily a problem. Windows uses available memory for caching and background services, then releases it when another program needs it. The important signs are whether the PC is slow, freezing, showing heavy disk activity, or constantly paging to the drive. Check the Memory and Commit columns in Task Manager and sort by memory usage to see what is actually consuming it.
