I recently got an adaptor that I thought would let me connect my headphones, but when I plug it in, there's no sound. I'm not sure what's going wrong. How can I tell if the adaptor is right for headphones, and what should I look for in a working adaptor?

Check to see if the package indicated that it's for headphones. The male plug you're using should typically have three sections (or rings) for standard headphones; if it has four, it might be designed for something else like power.
Make sure you're actually using an audio adaptor because some types can take the 3.5 mm jack but are meant for power instead. Just seeing 'Audio Converter' doesn't guarantee it's the right type for headphones.
It sounds like there could be a power issue, or your device isn't set up to convert the USB-A signal to 3.5mm audio properly. Make sure the adaptor is meant for audio devices specifically.
