Why isn't my new fiber optic internet faster on my PC?

I just got a fiber optic connection installed at my house in Germany, and I was really looking forward to the faster speeds. I tried downloading some games on Steam, but to my surprise, there was no difference compared to my previous internet. My router is new and working fine, and I have a relatively new PC. I'm using a Fritz! Powerline 510e to connect my PC to the router via power outlets, which should handle up to 500MB, but when I tested the speed with Google, I only got around 7 MB. I'm puzzled about why I'm not seeing any improvements in speed. Are there common issues I should be aware of?

Just to clarify, getting fiber doesn’t automatically mean it’s going to be faster unless your plan is for a higher speed than what you had before. Your setup with the Powerline might be the bottleneck here since you’re only getting ~56 Mbit/s. Consider testing a direct connection to really see your network's true potential.

It sounds like your issue might be with the Powerline adapter. Those aren’t the best when it comes to stability and speed since they rely on your home’s electrical wiring. You likely won’t see the advertised speed of 500MB, and it could be capping your connection significantly. You might want to switch to a direct LAN connection or use WiFi instead.

Powerline adapters are known for not reaching their theoretical max speeds. They’re usually only effective if your devices are on the same circuit. If you can, try connecting your PC directly to the router with an Ethernet cable or use WiFi; you'll likely see a big difference in performance.
