Why Was I Rejected After the Interview Loop but Still Invited to Discuss Other Roles?

I recently completed a five-round interview loop for an L5 Technical Account Manager position. My recruiter said the interview debrief would happen that day, and I might hear the decision shortly afterward. I then received an email asking me to schedule a 30-minute call. Shortly after scheduling it, I received an automated rejection saying I would not be moving forward with the role.

I have about two years of consulting experience and limited hands-on technical experience, so I knew the L5 position would be a stretch. Still, it was disappointing to make it through five interviews and then be rejected.

When I asked the recruiter about the call, they explained that the team had decided not to proceed with the TAM role and that part of the call would cover feedback. However, they emphasized that the main purpose was to discuss other open positions that might better match my background and interests.

What should I expect from this call? Is it normal for a recruiter to discuss other opportunities after a loop rejection, or is this simply a standard courtesy? I have also heard that candidates can sometimes be blocked from applying to other roles after an unsuccessful interview loop, so I am wondering whether this situation suggests that the interview went reasonably well in some areas.

Keep your expectations realistic. They may suggest a role at a different level or give fairly general feedback, such as needing deeper technical examples or more experience demonstrating the required skills. Sometimes these conversations lead to another opportunity, and sometimes they do not. Prepare a short explanation of what kind of work you want, ask which specific roles they have in mind, and request concrete feedback you can use in future interviews.

The recruiter’s explanation is probably pretty accurate. It sounds like you may have met the behavioral and leadership expectations but fell short on the technical requirements for this particular role. If the team had serious concerns about your overall fit, especially around core values or judgment, they probably would not be spending time looking for another position for you. The call will likely include high-level feedback, a discussion of your strengths and interests, and possibly suggestions for roles that are a better technical or seniority match.

That was my read too. They may have liked your overall approach and thought you could fit the company, but not necessarily this specific job. In recruiting terms, they may be trying to recycle your candidacy for another opening.

This can happen, and it is worth taking the call if you are still interested in working there. I went through something similar: the original role was closed out, but the recruiter mentioned other positions that might be a better fit. You may hear why the TAM role was not the right match and then discuss lower-level, less technical, or otherwise adjacent roles. The call does not guarantee another interview or an offer, but it is more encouraging than receiving only an automated rejection.
