Why Won’t My PC Boot After Upgrading RAM?

I've got an older PC with four 2GB DDR3 RAM sticks (all 2Rx8 PC3 10600U). Recently, I grabbed a cheap 16GB 2Rx4 PC3L 12800R stick to upgrade, but now my PC won't boot up. The fans spin, the power light flickers, and it beeps once, then three more times. I'm wondering if the new RAM is defective or just incompatible. I've already tried resetting the CMOS and cleaning the RAM slots, but no luck. Any ideas?

Also, don't forget to look up what the beep code means. Different sequences indicate different issues. A single beep followed by three usually points to RAM issues. Checking the motherboard specifications can really help you clarify what's compatible.

Good point! I had a similar issue once, and the beep codes led me to realize my RAM wasn't seated properly.

It sounds like you might be mixing RAM types that aren't compatible. If you're trying to run a 16GB stick with your existing 2GB sticks, that's likely causing the issues since they have different specifications (2Rx8 vs 2Rx4). If your motherboard doesn't support that combination, it'll fail to boot. Try using the new 16GB stick on its own, and see if that works! Also, double-check your motherboard's manual for supported RAM.

Yeah, definitely check that manual! Sometimes even if they look similar, the RAM can have different timings or voltage needs.
