Why won’t my Xbox connect to the internet after my dad changed the network settings?

My Xbox suddenly stopped connecting to wireless networks. It also does not detect a wired Ethernet connection, even though the cable is plugged in and the internet works normally on every other device. I briefly got Wi‑Fi working a couple of times, but the connection dropped again when I launched a game. I suspect my dad changed something on the router or enabled a parental-control restriction. What could cause this, and what is the proper way to get the connection restored?

A phone or laptop hotspot can be useful as a temporary diagnostic test, if your family’s rules and data plan allow it. If the Xbox connects to the hotspot, the console is probably working and the home router is where the restriction or configuration problem is. If it still fails, the issue may be with the Xbox’s network hardware or saved network settings.

I’d treat the hotspot as a test rather than a way around a household restriction. It’s better to agree on the access rules with your dad first.

Before assuming it’s a router block, restart the Xbox, router, and modem, then test a different Ethernet cable and port. Also check the Xbox network status and run its built-in network troubleshooting. If Wi‑Fi and Ethernet both fail only on the Xbox, contacting the person who manages the router or Xbox support is safer than changing network settings yourself.

Router login pages vary by manufacturer, so common addresses may not work. The router’s label or manufacturer documentation should list the correct management address, but only the person responsible for the network should change those settings. Since you mentioned being blocked after swearing while gaming, talking through what happened and asking what you can do to earn access back may resolve this faster than trying to bypass it.

The Xbox may have been blocked in the router’s device-management or parental-control settings, possibly by its device or MAC address. Since the connection works on other devices, the router and internet service are probably fine. The best fix is to ask your dad whether he restricted the Xbox and have him remove the block or explain when it can be used.
