Why Would My Windows 11 PC Boot Straight Into the BIOS?

When I got home, my Windows 11 PC was powered on and sitting in the BIOS instead of loading Windows. Could this happen automatically because of a power interruption or hardware problem, or is it more likely that someone turned it on and entered the BIOS? The computer is a prebuilt system with an 11th-generation Intel Core i5-11400F, RTX 3060 Ti, 16 GB of RAM, and a Micron 2210 NVMe SSD. I don't know the motherboard model.

Some motherboards have a setting to automatically power back on after an outage. That explains why the PC might have been running when you got home, but it doesn’t necessarily explain the BIOS screen. A failed boot drive, loose connection, unstable hardware, or a one-time firmware hiccup could have caused the BIOS to appear.

A power interruption or brief hardware hiccup can sometimes cause a computer to restart and open the BIOS, although it isn’t the most common outcome. Restart it and see whether it boots into Windows normally. If it keeps happening, check whether the SSD is detected and look for hardware or boot-order problems.
VelvetMango42: Power outages happen fairly often here, but this is the first time it has opened the BIOS instead of starting Windows.

It’s also possible that someone pressed the BIOS key while turning the computer on and then didn’t know how to exit. That can happen accidentally, so the BIOS screen alone isn’t proof that anyone changed anything. Check whether the settings and boot order still look normal, then choose the option to exit without saving if you’re unsure.

MapleCircuit8: If the computer was on before the outage, the automatic power-on setting could account for it. If it was already off, that setting usually wouldn’t start it by itself.
