Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth Keep Disappearing on Windows 11

I opened an older laptop that had been unused for about two years, and both Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth were missing from Windows 11. I've already tried restarting the related services, performing a network reset, running troubleshooters, checking Device Manager, reinstalling and updating drivers, and resetting Windows. A few times, both adapters came back and worked normally, but they disappeared again after a few minutes. What could be causing this, and how can I determine whether the problem is Windows, the BIOS, or failing hardware?

Since Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth are often handled by the same internal card, the card itself may be failing. A USB Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth adapter can provide a quick workaround, but it won’t explain the underlying issue.

BrightNook18: That’s a practical temporary fix, especially if the built-in adapter is unreliable.

Check the laptop’s hardware wireless switch, keyboard shortcut, and airplane-mode setting. Also verify the exact make and model so you can check for the correct BIOS and chipset drivers. If a factory reset only reinstalled Windows and the problem returned, that points away from a simple configuration issue.

The best next step is to boot from a Linux live USB and test Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth without changing your Windows installation. If they also fail there, the likely causes are the wireless card, its antenna connections, or a BIOS setting. If they work in Linux, focus the remaining troubleshooting on Windows drivers and configuration.

SilverPineQ: A card that works briefly and then disappears can be failing as it warms up. If you’re comfortable opening the laptop, reseat the wireless card and its antenna leads; otherwise, replacing the card is usually inexpensive.
