Will 720p Gaming Look Sharper on a 1440p Monitor Than on a 1080p Display?

I currently use a 1080p monitor and play games at 720p because my integrated graphics can usually reach around 60 FPS at medium settings. Unfortunately, 720p looks noticeably blurry on the display. Would running 720p on a 1440p monitor look clearer because 1440p is exactly twice 720p, allowing each game pixel to map to a 2×2 block of display pixels? I'm using a Vega 7 iGPU and would like to know whether buying a 1440p monitor would meaningfully improve the image.

Yes, 720p maps evenly to 1440p, so integer scaling can display each source pixel as a 2×2 block. That usually looks cleaner than scaling 720p to 1080p, where the pixels do not divide evenly and the monitor has to interpolate between them. However, it still will not look as sharp as native resolution, and the monitor needs to support integer scaling or use a suitable GPU scaling option.

A 1440p screen may look somewhat better because of the higher pixel density and the clean 2× scaling, but it will not completely eliminate blur. Check whether your monitor or graphics driver offers integer scaling. If the game supports FSR, that can also produce a better-looking image than basic monitor upscaling.

The biggest improvement would come from a dedicated graphics card, if that is an option, but it is not realistic or affordable for everyone. Even an older budget GPU would generally handle 1080p gaming better than an integrated Vega 7. If upgrading is not possible, try integer scaling and game-level upscaling before replacing the monitor.

With a Vega 7, it may be more practical to run the game in a smaller window at a higher resolution instead of stretching 720p across the whole screen. A centered window with a black background can look sharper, though you lose some screen area.
