I'm burning videos onto DVD+R discs to give to people who may watch them using PlayStation 2, PlayStation 4, or PlayStation 5 disc drives. If I simply copy the video files onto the disc, will the consoles play them, or do I need to author and burn the disc in a specific format?

For PlayStation 2 specifically, compatibility is more limited. A DVD-Video disc is the most practical choice, but some consoles or drives may be picky about DVD+R media. Playing ordinary video files such as MP4 directly generally requires a compatible media player and supported codecs, so it isn’t as reliable as authoring a standard DVD.
If you want the disc to work on the widest range of devices, use DVD-authoring software rather than a regular file-burning option. Convert the videos into DVD-Video format, create the menus or title structure if needed, and finalize the disc so no further data can be added.
DVD+R discs can work, but the safest option is to create a proper DVD-Video disc and finalize it after burning. Simply dragging MP4 files onto the disc creates a data disc, which may not play as a normal DVD on every console. PlayStation 4 and 5 should handle finalized video DVDs, while PlayStation 2 compatibility can vary by model and disc.
