I'm building my first desktop with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and an RTX 5080, and I'm trying to plan the airflow properly. My desk sits in the corner of the room, with the right side against the wall, so the PC needs to stay on the right side of the desk where I can see the components and lighting. The case is a Fractal Pop XL with three front intake fans, one rear exhaust fan, and room for two additional fans on top. When it's positioned against the front-right side of the desk, there will be about 3 inches of clearance between the case and the wall. Will that be enough space for the PSU, GPU, and CPU cooler to get and exhaust air properly? I'm planning to add two top exhaust fans, but I'm also considering using a 240 mm AIO mounted at the top instead and leaving the rear fan to help exhaust GPU heat. I'd appreciate advice on the best fan layout. I'll also be using a 240 Hz QD-OLED monitor—could the warm exhaust from the back of the PC cause any problems if it blows behind the monitor?

If the desk layout is the main concern, a smaller high-airflow case could leave more room behind the system, but it isn’t required. The Pop XL has plenty of internal space, and three inches behind it is much better than placing it inside a cabinet or tightly enclosed compartment. The monitor should also be fine; normal GPU exhaust won’t harm it, though leaving some space behind the monitor and avoiding a completely trapped pocket of hot air is still a good idea.
You probably don’t need to switch to a 240 mm AIO just because the PC is near a wall. Start with the air cooler and add the two top exhaust fans. You can experiment with fan curves and placement once everything is assembled, then watch CPU and GPU temperatures under load.
Three inches of clearance should generally be fine as long as the case isn’t enclosed on all sides. The important thing is keeping the front intakes, rear exhaust, and PSU intake unobstructed. A normal fan setup with front intake and rear/top exhaust should handle the system well.
That makes sense. I chose the large case mainly for possible future upgrades, but I’ll keep an eye on temperatures and airflow rather than adding an AIO automatically.
