I got a Zotac GTX 1050 for free, along with some DDR4 memory, a case, and a power supply. I only need to buy a motherboard and CPU to finish the PC. Would a Ryzen 5 5500 be a reasonable match, or would it bottleneck the graphics card? This is just a temporary build while I save up for a stronger GPU, possibly an RX 7600.

It should be perfectly fine as a stopgap gaming PC, as long as you keep expectations realistic. You’ll likely need lower settings in newer games, and demanding titles may struggle because of the GTX 1050 rather than the Ryzen 5 5500. Once you upgrade the GPU, the same CPU should remain useful for 1080p gaming.
The GTX 1050 was already an entry-level card when it launched, so almost any reasonably modern desktop CPU will keep up with it. The 5500 is actually more CPU than this card needs, but that gives you room for a future graphics card upgrade.
The 5500 is a solid budget processor and should handle games well. In a few CPU-heavy titles it may not deliver the same maximum frame rates as a faster CPU, but with a GTX 1050 you’ll hit the GPU limit long before that matters.
