I mainly play demanding single-player games at 1440p, along with occasional League of Legends, Dota 2, and similar titles. My system is currently on AM4 with a reused Ryzen 5 5600G and 16GB of DDR4-2400 memory. I'm considering a Ryzen 5 5500X3D for around $185, and I may gradually replace the RAM with 32GB of DDR4-3400.
My monitor runs at 1440p and 240Hz. I'm not trying to build the absolute fastest system, but I don't want the upgrade to feel underwhelming or leave too much performance on the table with a Radeon 9070 XT. The games I play most often benefit from extra CPU cache, so the 5500X3D seems appealing. A Ryzen 7 5800X3D would cost roughly $380 where I live, while moving to a newer platform would also require more expensive memory.
Would the 5500X3D be a reasonable match for the 9070 XT, or would it be too much of a compromise?

At 1440p, especially with high or maximum settings, the graphics card will usually be the limiting component, so the 5500X3D should be a perfectly usable pairing. You may see a CPU limit in competitive games, low settings, or situations where you’re targeting very high frame rates, but it shouldn’t make the upgrade feel pointless.
I wouldn’t worry about trying to force the 9070 XT to run at full utilization in every game. A high-end GPU paired with a somewhat older platform is still a good gaming setup at 1440p. If you mainly play visually demanding games, buy the 5500X3D at that price and enjoy it; only consider a platform change if you consistently play CPU-bound games at very high refresh rates.
Since you’re already buying memory, it’s worth comparing the total cost of moving to a newer platform. A reasonably priced newer CPU and motherboard may offer better long-term performance, and you could potentially buy memory second-hand or find a bundle deal. That said, if the 5500X3D is genuinely available for $185, keeping your existing platform is the cheaper and simpler upgrade.
The 5500X3D can bottleneck the 9070 XT in CPU-intensive games, particularly at 1080p or 1440p on low settings. At 1440p with demanding visual settings, the difference is much smaller because the GPU is doing most of the work. For League of Legends and similar games, the card will be more than fast enough anyway.
Compared with the 5600G and slow DDR4 memory, the 5500X3D should be a noticeable improvement, especially in games that benefit from extra cache.
