Will an i7-9700K significantly bottleneck an RX 7700 XT?

I recently bought a PC with an i7-9700K and an RTX 2070 Super. The 2070 Super has been adequate, but I'd like to upgrade the graphics card to an RX 7700 XT to keep the system capable for the next few years. My budget only allows for a GPU upgrade right now, so I'm wondering whether the older processor would cause severe performance loss with the newer card or whether the combination would work reasonably well. I mainly play Helldivers, Ready or Not, and Squad, likely at 1440p.

There isnโt one universal bottleneck percentage. It depends heavily on the game, resolution, frame-rate target, and settings. CPU-heavy or competitive games can expose the 9700Kโs age, while 1440p gaming will generally put more load on the GPU. Upgrading the graphics card now and replacing the CPU later is a sensible plan.

For games like Squad, Ready or Not, and Helldivers, performance can vary by scene and by how CPU-heavy the match is. You may occasionally leave some performance on the table, but it shouldnโt make the upgrade pointless. A rough estimate such as 5โ20% is possible in some situations, but online calculators canโt predict it reliably.

The 9700K is still a capable gaming CPU, so this pairing should be fine in most situations. At 1440p, the RX 7700 XT will usually be the limiting component rather than the processor, especially with higher graphics settings.

Iโd go ahead with the GPU upgrade rather than replacing the whole platform immediately. The 9700K should maintain playable frame rates, and at 1440p the 7700 XT is likely to provide a noticeable improvement over the 2070 Super. You can move to a newer CPU later when the budget allows.

MellowCedar42: Thatโs what Iโm leaning toward. Iโll upgrade the CPU later, but for now Iโm comfortable accepting some mismatch between the processor and graphics card.
