I'm still using a Radeon RX 580, and it handles every game in my library smoothly, including the first Spider-Man game. I was surprised that it couldn't run Spider-Man 2, since the visuals don't seem dramatically different to me. That has me wondering whether GTA 6 will also require a major upgrade. Will an RX 580 have any chance of running it, or would I need to spend an unreasonable amount on a new graphics card?

I wouldn’t plan on the RX 580 running it well. It might technically launch if the game is heavily optimized, but playable performance at acceptable settings is a different question. Wait for the official PC requirements before deciding what to buy.
Realistically, the RX 580 is already an older midrange card based on technology from 2016–2017. By the time GTA 6 reaches PC, it may be around a decade old. Since PC versions of these games often include improved visuals and higher requirements, getting a smooth experience on an RX 580 seems very unlikely.
It’s too early to know. GTA 6 hasn’t been announced for PC yet, and the PC version could arrive a year or more after the console release. Until the system requirements are published, nobody can say for sure.
You probably won’t need to spend thousands on an upgrade. Once the PC version is closer, a reasonably priced used card—such as a previous-generation upper-midrange model—could be enough. Prices and requirements will be clearer then, so there’s no reason to upgrade right now.
That’s pretty wild to think about. I’m surprised the current consoles might even struggle with a game that demanding.
