Will blocking someone alert them or stop sharing my location?

I want to block someone from school who I currently share my location with. We haven't spoken recently, but they tend to gossip, so I'm worried they'll get an alert, see a message in our conversation, or notice that I've disappeared from their location list. Does blocking notify them, and do I need to stop location sharing separately?

Be aware that stopping location sharing can leave a system-generated message in the conversation saying that you stopped sharing, depending on the device and software version. It may not be a normal notification, but they could see it if they open the chat.

If you’re unsure how it behaves on your version, test it with someone you trust first. That can show whether stopping location sharing creates a visible message before you do it with this person.

That’s helpful—I’ll test it with my partner first so I know exactly what appears.

Blocking itself doesn’t send an alert or put a notification in the chat. However, blocking and location sharing are separate settings, so check Find My directly and stop sharing your location there as well. They may not receive a push notification, but if they look at the conversation or their People list, they could notice that your location is no longer available.
