I recently learned that my grandfather installed a light switch for another room without telling me. I'm concerned that this could potentially harm my computer. I built my PC not long ago and it has an 80 Plus certified power supply. Is there any risk involved if the PC is left on while the switch is operating?

There is a slight chance for damage, just keep an eye on things. But honestly, it’s unlikely that you’ll encounter any problems.
Generally, there’s not much to worry about unless the light switch is turning off power to the outlet that your PC is plugged into. If it just controls the light without cutting power to the receptacle, your setup should be fine. Just make sure you’re using a surge protector to avoid any potential issues if the power gets interrupted unexpectedly.
Exactly, the switch should not affect the receptacle. You’re all good!
If the light switch impacts the power to your receptacle, then you should definitely consider an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) or move your PC to another outlet. However, if you’re still getting constant power, then you shouldn’t have any problems. Your setup sounds solid with the 80 Plus certified power supply too!
The outlet didn’t switch off while he installed it. So I’m assuming everything's okay there. Glad to hear it!
Good to know! It's crucial to have consistent power if you plan on leaving the PC on.
I’ve had a PC running non-stop on the same circuit as a light switch for years, and it hasn’t been an issue. It’s pretty common to have such setups, so I wouldn’t worry too much. Just ensure everything is working properly after the switch installation!
As long as the outlet isn’t switched off while you’re using the PC, a light switch won’t inherently damage your power supply or computer. It's pretty much the same as someone physically unplugging the power cord or flipping the PSU switch. No harm done unless it’s flipped off unexpectedly!

I’ve got a switched plug too, and when I need to work, I just turn it off. The PC stays on fine, as long as I don’t keep cutting power. Sounds like you’re safe as long as the switch isn’t killing the outlet.
