I'm planning to upgrade my graphics card from an ASUS Dual Radeon RX 6600 to an RX 9070 XT. My current power supply is an ASUS ROG Strix 650W 80+ Gold fully modular unit, paired with a Ryzen 5 7500F, ASUS TUF Gaming B650-PLUS WIFI motherboard, 16GB of DDR5-5600 memory, a 2TB NVMe SSD, and a Dark Rock TF 2 cooler. Would the 650W PSU be sufficient, or should I replace it with a 750W, 850W, or possibly 1000W model before installing the new GPU? I'd rather have enough headroom and avoid stressing the system.

The 650W unit will probably work, but I wouldn’t pair a high-power new GPU with the minimum practical capacity if you’re buying parts anyway. An 850W quality PSU is a sensible upgrade and should leave plenty of room for transient spikes without paying much more than a 750W model.
I’d lean toward an 850W PSU from a reputable line. The card can draw around 330W in normal heavy use and may briefly spike higher, so extra capacity gives you more margin and reduces concern about the PSU running near its limits. Don’t choose based on wattage alone—look for a well-reviewed, modern ATX 3.1 model with the proper GPU power connectors.
That makes sense. I was looking at an ASUS Prime 850W Gold ATX 3.1 or a Corsair RM850x, and I may consider the 1000W version if the price difference is reasonable.
A good 650W unit may technically run the 9070 XT, especially with a Ryzen 5 7500F, but 750W would provide more comfortable headroom and be a better choice for future upgrades.
I was mainly worried about what could happen if the GPU suddenly pulled more power than the PSU could comfortably provide. I’ll compare reputable 750W and 850W options before upgrading.
