I'm curious about what happens when I log out of my account on a laptop that doesn't have a password. Will it just log back into that account automatically, or do I need to select the user each time?

Yeah, most of the time, if you log out, it will just load the profile without needing you to enter any password. If you want to avoid that, it’s a good idea to set a password, even if you’re the only one using the laptop. If someone else gets ahold of it, they could easily access everything if you're not careful.
Usually, you have to select the user after logging out. It depends on your operating system, though. What are you using?
When you log out, you should see the login screen, and it won't automatically log you in unless you reboot the laptop. At least that’s how it works with default settings on Windows. You could set it up so you have to click on the username to log back in.
