Will this M.2 SSD work in a Dell Inspiron 3582?

I'm upgrading my dad's Dell Inspiron 3582, which currently uses a 1TB hard drive. The computer becomes sluggish during Windows updates and malware scans, so I'd like to move the operating system to an SSD rather than replace the whole computer. Dell lists support for one M.2 2280 solid-state drive, Class 40, with capacities up to 256GB. Would the SSD in the linked product work in this laptop, and is the 256GB listing an actual capacity limit?
Answers
Replacing the hard drive with an SSD is a reasonable upgrade for this machine, especially for web browsing and email. Just make sure the linked model is NVMe rather than M.2 SATA, because the Inspiron 3582โs M.2 slot is intended for PCIe NVMe storage. Before cloning, make a backup of anything important and check whether the SSD includes a mounting screw; the laptop may not have one installed.

The Inspiron 3582 has an M.2 2280 slot that supports PCIe NVMe SSDs, so a standard 2280 NVMe drive should work. Dellโs โup to 256GBโ wording generally describes the configurations they sold, not necessarily a hard capacity limit. A 500GB or 1TB drive should be usable, although you should confirm the exact drive interface before buying. You can clone the existing Windows installation to the SSD, install it in the M.2 slot, and then select it as the boot drive in BIOS. Keep the 1TB hard drive for storage if the laptop has room for both drives.

Please verify the full service tag or exact configuration if possible, since Dell sold several versions of the Inspiron 3582. Also check the SSDโs physical keying and length: it should be an M.2 2280 drive. If the laptop only has the 2.5-inch drive bay populated, you may need a mounting bracket or cable arrangement to keep the original HDD, depending on the internal layout.
