Will upgrading from a 250GB SSD to a 1TB drive reduce performance?

I've been using a 250GB SSD for a while and want to upgrade to a 1TB model. I've heard that larger-capacity SSDs might be slower, so I'm wondering whether that's true or just a misconception. Are there any differences I should consider when comparing drives?

An SSD can slow down if it gets nearly full, since it needs free space for background management and wear leveling. Try to leave some capacity unused, regardless of whether the drive is 250GB or 1TB.

Capacity alone generally doesn’t make an SSD slower. In many product lines, the larger versions are just as fast or even faster because they may use more NAND chips in parallel. The specific model, controller, NAND type, and interface matter much more.

There was a theory that larger drives might have extra management overhead, but it generally isn’t noticeable in real-world use. Just compare actual reviews and specifications, since different capacities within the same series can sometimes use different hardware.

The main comparison is between the drive technologies. For example, a 250GB NVMe drive can be faster than a 1TB SATA SSD because NVMe uses a faster interface—not because the smaller drive has less storage.
