Will Windows 7 Treat a 3.5-Inch USB Drive Enclosure Like a Hard Drive or Flash Drive?

I'm planning to buy a USB enclosure for a 3.5-inch internal hard drive. In Windows 7, will the drive appear as a normal hard disk or as removable storage, similar to a USB flash drive? I'm asking because my current Windows installation has a shortcut virus, and I want to connect the drive safely while I deal with the infection.
