My Windows 11 laptop worked normally for a long time, but recently the display started glitching badly. The left side of the screen sometimes flashes white, and it has also blinked very rapidly. The rest of the laptop seems to work fine. Could this be caused by malware, a graphics driver, or failing hardware? I'd like to troubleshoot it before considering replacement because the laptop is otherwise in good condition.

This sounds more like a hardware problem than malware. Connect the laptop to an external monitor or TV and mirror the display. If the external screen looks normal while the laptop panel still flashes, the LCD panel or its display cable is probably failing. If both screens show the glitch, the graphics chip or driver could be involved.
Malware is very unlikely to cause a physical-looking display fault like this. Modern malware generally targets accounts, files, or personal information rather than making one section of a screen flash. Still, run a normal Windows Security scan, back up important files, and avoid changing BIOS or disk settings until your data is safe.
The location of the problem is useful: flashing on only one side often points to a damaged LCD panel or a loose or failing cable near the hinge. You can also check whether the glitch appears in the BIOS or during startup. If it does, Windows and its drivers are unlikely to be the cause. If it only happens after Windows loads, try reinstalling or rolling back the graphics driver.
