My Windows 11 PC makes an error notification sound roughly every 40 minutes. Sometimes it also switches me away from the application I'm using, almost like Alt+Tab was pressed. It's especially disruptive while I'm recording YouTube videos. I ran a Malwarebytes scan, but it found nothing and the problem continues. I've searched for solutions and am worried that resetting Windows may be the only option, but I don't want to lose my files. What should I check first, and how can I back up my data safely if a reset becomes necessary?

Before resetting Windows, make a backup of your important files to an external drive or trusted cloud storage, and verify that the copied files open correctly. A reset may not be necessary, though—check Event Viewer around the time the sound occurs, review recently installed programs and scheduled tasks, and unplug nonessential USB devices to rule out a failing peripheral or driver. You can also try a clean boot to see whether a background application is stealing focus. If the issue remains after troubleshooting, a Windows reset is safer once your backup is confirmed.

I’m not sure this is definitely a Windows problem either. A keyboard, USB device, driver, or background utility could be generating the sound and taking focus, so I’d troubleshoot those before reinstalling.
